A Forested Battle (Anyone can join) « Thread Started on Mar 17, 2006, 10:43pm »
OoC: *dusts off Rex* Well, I'd better put him to use, eh? I'm just looking for a battle. In a forest. A forested battle. Enough chit-chat, onto the fighting.
BiC:
Rex surveyed the forest below. Standing on a cliff, he could see for miles off into the distance. As far as he could see in any direction was forest. Rows upon natural rows of trees stretched off into the mountains surrounding the area. This cliff near the center was the only break from the monotonous sight of the trees.
As he took the path back down, he thought quietly to himself. 'They said the bounty would be here. So far, nothing.'
'Patience, little one' the voice inside of him whispered quietly. 'Soon. I can sense it.'
After years of traveling with the demon, Rex had gotten used to its interruptions. He had come to terms with living with it, but he had not forgiven Scion. Just as he was beginning to retort, he heard a rustling.
'I told you' the voice said with a hint of a chuckle.

OoC: As no one else is taking the opportunity, I'll fight ya. ^_^ Especially since it's in a forest... just perfect for Bella.
BiC: Bella walked along the forest path, the late afternoon sun making patterns of light through the leaves. She breathed deep, revelling in the clear, pure air of the forest. She felt so at home among the trees; everything seemed so peaceful. A rumble interrupted her peaceful thoughts. She looked down with a sheepish grin... it had been awhile since she had eaten hadn't it?
Bella pulled out her bow and began looking around for signs of life. A slight rustle off to her left reached her ears. Bella nocked an arrow and began creeping through the underbrush. She crouched behind a bush, scanning the area. She spotted a rabbit up ahead, and was about to let her arrow fly, when she heard running footsteps from behind. She turned with wide eyes to see a young man running at her with a sword out and ready to swing.
Wondering what the hell was going on, she looked ahead of the man and saw a well placed bush. Grinning, Bella concentrated on it. Just as her unknown attacker was about to pass it, the bush suddenly grew up and wrapped itself about the man's ankles, making him fall hard on the ground. Bella winced slightly, but had no time to hesitate, as she knew the man would be up again in moments. In a flash she had stowed her bow away again and now held her short sword up and ready to defend herself.

Rex fell right into the ground. Grumbling to himself about sneaky bushes and enchanted plants he quickly cut his grassy bonds. When he stood up his prey was nowhere to be found.
"Oh great!" he moaned aloud. "Dang!" he continued. "Now she knows where I am!"
'Then stop yelling so loudly!' Scion shouted in his mind.
'Sorry. You don't have to yell, though.' Rex's mind hurt from the demon's fury.
'Get out there and find her!' If the demon had hands, he certainly would have slapped himself in the forehead from frustration.
He silently crept through the underbrush, looking for any sign of the girl he had seen. His mind began to wander as his search turned up nothing.
'Did they say the bounty was a girl? She doesn't seem like someone who would do any crimes.' Rex never thought someone who looked like that could do any harm. She looked like a hunter, yes. But an evildoer? No way.
'Maybe that's why she hasn't been caught yet. She could use her innocent looks to fool those around her.'
'Always the optimist, aren't you?' Rex thought sarcastically.
'Stop! the demon shouted suddenly. 'A few feet to your left. A bush should be there. Rex turned and there was the bush. 'Yes, there was rustling.
The warrior silently crept toward the lone plant, making sure he was as far away from other greenery as he could be. With a quick step, he rushed into the bush and pointed his sword and the shivering animal. An animal. A rabbit, to be exact. It darted off in fright, and Rex allowed it to go.
'Yep, those rabbits sure are dangerous, aren't they?' Rex said almost jokingly.
'Fool child! At least I'm looking for traces of her instead of letting my mind think of how pretty she is!
"What?!" Rex exclaimed out loud. "You know that's not true!"
"I'm not sure who you're talking to," came a voice from the trees, "but whoever it is better come out next to you."
The bush the rabbit had been hiding behind suddenly wrapped itself around his legs. Rex screamed in frustration. A girl who could control plants. In a forest? This would be hard.

Bella stepped out of the concealment of the tree's, holding her bow with an arrow aimed squarely on the strange man. He was wrestling with the vines, about to cut them. "Oh, I don't think so," Bella said. "Besides, you wouldn't have time to free yourself before I shot you. Now, where's the person you were talking to?"
"Talking to? I wasn't talking to anyone, just... talking to myself. Heheh, bad habit you know. I start thinking about things in my head and get so worked up I say something without realizing it." Rex kept up his voice sounding friendly and, he hoped, fairly trustworthy.
Bella wasn't buying it. "Ha, that didn't sound like something you'd say if you were talking to yourself. Not unless you've been dipping a bit too much into your ale, and while you do seem to be falling down a lot," Bella grinned mischieviously. "You're not acting like a drunk person. So just save us both some time and tell the truth, huh?"
"Well, this is kind of embarrassing..." Rex said, thinking fast. "But... well... I've got multiple personalities. Yeah... my other one just drives me crazy, that's why I yelled just now." Rex hoped he was being convincing enough for the girl.
"Multiple personalities, eh?" Bella said skeptically. "That's a rather interesting idea, but I don't quite believe you. I think perhaps you're just trying to distract me while your buddy sneaks around to attack me from behind and can free you." As she said this, Bella turned slightly, scanning the trees and underbrush.
While her back was turned, Rex tried to cut his bounds with his sword, making as little noise as possible. Just as he was finishing, an arrow cut through the air above his head, passing so close it ruffled his hair. Rex dropped down to the ground as fast as he could, and then promptly rolled to the side to avoid a searching branch. He jumped up with his sword in front of him, though still keeping half an eye on the plants around him.

Swiping at any stray branch that was unfortunate enough to brush him, Rex slowly advanced.
"I'm afraid you're mistaken. I travel alone." Another arrow flew close to his side, ruffling his shirt. 'This girl is crazy! Why hasn't she killed me yet? For a murderer with such a reputation and a price I would've expected her to be done with me by now.'
'Don't be afraid, boy. I'm sure she'll be done with you after she's finished playing.' Scion chuckled. 'But why aren't you telling her what she wants to know? She's so overeager she'd be happy to believe you have another laying in wait. She stops questioning you, and her attention will be split.'
'Good point' Rex countered as he blocked another arrow.
"You're trying my patience" she said curtly.
"No need to be so overzealous. I'll admit it. My friend is, in fact, in these very woods. I have no idea of his position now, but I do know he moved off to my left--that's your right--before you spotted me."
Bella took these words in. Casting another glance around her, she didn't see anything. Not even her superior hunting skills picked up a trace of another being. She threw plants in every direction around her, hoping to catch the other man off guard and maybe cause him to make a sound, but nothing replied. His friend must be very skilled. It was like he wasn't even there.
"Alright. Stop moving." Rex took another step forward. "I said stop! Not another step!" Not heeding her warnings, Rex continued onward at a slug's pace. "Do you want me to shoot you?" Without replying, Rex just continued onward. "Fine!" As her arrow shot at Rex, he parried it easily and broke into a run. Leaping over a bush that had attacked, he landed squarely on Bella's chest.
"Now, you're supposed to be brought in alive. I find it very tedious to explain how I kill some of those I find. Not only that, but I really would like to keep you alive."
'For your pleasure?' Scion erupted in laughter. Rex just frowned. Bella was puzzled at his sudden change in face, but had no room to comment. She could hardly breathe with all his weight on her. Rex only realized this when she started to gasp.
"Oh, sorry about that" he grinned sheepishly. "Don't know my own weight." Bella merely gave an indignant 'Hmph!' Holding her hands from behind, Rex wrapped a thick rope around them and brought her gently to the ground. "I know it's not lady-like to just be laying in the dirt, but I need to rest before we go trekking back. You're a tough one to catch." His tone was light and merry from his quick success. "Tough, but fast." He sat down hard, making sure to keep an eye not only on the girl, but on the vegetation around him.

'Supposed to be brought in alive?' Bella thought in confusion. 'What the heck does that mean? Who is he bringing me to?' She wiggled her bonds experimentally, but they were too tight to do anything with. Also, Rex had noticed. He made a warning sound, and Bella promptly lay still again. 'Alright... what am I gonna do now?' Bella thought to herself. 'Gotta get out of this somehow.' She decided to try and stall for time by talking to her captor, seeing what she could learn.
Deciding to go for the blunt approach, Bella lifted her head a bit from the dirt and asked, "So... who exactly sent you to capture me?"
Rex looked at her incredulously. "Who else? The police." ((OoC: Police can equal whatever the lawmakers in this unknown region are... I just didn't know what to say, heh.))
Bella stared at him from the ground. What on earth did the police want with her? Rex saw her confused look, and frowned to himself. This girl was acting less and less like the bounty he was after all the time.
Well of course she is, she's just been caught! Scion said. You're not going to let her get away just because she's cute, are you?
Scion had a point... He looked at the girl again and shook his head. She was the bounty, and he couldn't let her trick him. He stood up quickly. "C'mon," he said, pulling her to her feet. "Time to go."
"What about your friend?" Bella asked. "Don't you need to wait for him?"
"Nah, he'll be watching us," Rex said. "He'll come out when he wants to."
"Hmmm..." Bella said. Rex took her arm so that she couldn't escape, and began walking through the forest. Bella began to form a plan. Her best chance of escaping would be while still in the forest. She'd lower this guy's guard by talking with him, and then nab him with some plants, and make sure he was wrapped up really well this time. Then she could get rid of the rope and escape. Deciding it was the best chance she had, Bella began attempting to strike up a conversation with her captor.

OoC: Well, so much for editing. Anyways, back on track.
BiC:
"So, how long have you been a bounty hunter" Bella asked nicely.
"Not so much a bounty hunter as a do-gooder" Rex replied. "They needed help capturing you, so naturally I helped to capture you."
"Oh. Well why help people you don't know?"
"Why not? They're nice people."
"Is that the real reason?" Behind her back, Bella was trying to reach her dagger.
"Well, it's part of the reason." Rex looked at her and Bella stopped her squirming, giving him a warm smile. "Now why'd you kill all those people?"
"Who said I did? I haven't killed anyone! I'm just a hunter." Bella said this angrily, mad at the fact that she was even mistaken for a murderer.
"Although I haven't heard that specifically, I've heard things somewhat like it before. They're called excuses." Rex took on a suddenly hard tone. "And there's no excusing what you've done."
"But I didn't do it!" Sighing heavily, Bella fell silent. After a few minutes, she began again. "So how long have you worked with your partner?"
"Ever since....I was young." He said it with a sense of heaviness.
"Is something wrong?" Bella pried.
"No, nothing that concerns you. It's my own problem."
From then on Rex refused any attempts at another conversation. But it had been enough. Bella snaked a small bush in front of them over to Rex's leg. Right before it reached, Rex stomped it into the ground.
"I wouldn't advise trying that again" Rex said and shoved her roughly in front of him. Then, picking up his pace, he began hauling her along once more. Bella tried another tactic. Unsheathing her dagger that she had managed to reach, she quickly cut through her bonds. Then she held them together until the time was right for her to make her escape.

Bella noticed that the trees were beginning to thin. "It's now or never..." she pulled her hands out of the cut rope and quickly grabbed her sword. She made a quick downswing, getting Rex's shoulder. But while it hurt, his armor protected him, and he quickly spun around with his sword to take advantage of the opening after her attack.
Bella jumped back quickly to avoid the swing, but he still managed to get her side. She winced and glanced down at the small red spot on her tunic. She stepped back a few steps, drawing Rex after her. Then she jumped forward with a rather wild swing, which he easily dodged, but while he was concentrating on that, a bush shot out and wrapped itself tightly around Rex's leg. As he moved to chop that one off, another found it's way around his other leg. They came so quickly he could barely keep cutting them. Soon a network of bushes and vines was tangled around both his legs, and Bella stood triumphantly a few feet from the forest edge. She turned to escape, but then...

As Rex was entangled he began to get annoyed. These bushes just don't stop coming, do they?! He hacked and slashed furiously, but was quickly overcome. As Bella smirked, Rex returned a smile of his own. He concentrated hard and sparks shot from his hands as they ingnited, turning the bushes around him to ash.
"Let's not try that anymore. It wouldn't be wise of you." Rex put out his flames and brought out his blade. He swiped his sword at Bella's legs, but she jumped nimbly over it. Before his swing went too wide, Rex brought his sword in just in time to parry one of Bella's attacks. He sent her sword off to the side and gave a quick thrust that was dodged by her sliding to the side. She jumped back quickly and ran back into the forest, holding her side. Rex stretched his shoulder and followed cautiously. While they were in her territory, she still had the advantage.
